A recently-divorced, penniless New York science fiction author takes a job to write the official biography of a iron-fisted Balkan president. He navigates between toadying government aides, lying politicians, harassed dissident journalists, and Croatian and Bosnian women looking for a quick visa. Believing that there is no problem that can't be solved through erotic passion, he misplaces his trust in the first Balkan woman he meets, and soon becomes a target when labeled an enemy spy. He surreptitiously meets with an anonymous source: a high-ranking member of the Bosnian-Croat Federation who gives him a series of faxes which detail the President's orders to establish death camps in Bosnia. With the help and trust of a Bosnian woman, he discovers a secret war, and his own integrity. He confronts the leader of this secret war, and takes a final stand that is shocking, comic and touching. |
